Colour vision: Putting it in context
نویسنده
چکیده
Our perception of a surface's colour depends in a complex way on the colours of surrounding surfaces; this "colour contrast' is linked to the "colour constancy' which is important for object recognition, but in ways more complex than we yet understand.

Unconventional colour vision
Butterflies and stomatopods are certainly outliers in their unconventional colour sense and despite some similarities at first glance, in fact sample the world of colour very differently. In one way, butterflies are relatively conventional, possessing either tri-or tetrachromatic colour vision, then just adding one or several task-specific sub-mechanisms onto this. It is the stomatopods so far ...
متن کاملRegion saliency as a measure for colour segmentation stability
This paper proposes a goodness function for colour segmentation, which allows to predict whether the segmented regions will be stable against noise, variation of lighting, and change of viewpoint. As such a measure, colour saliency defined from average border contrast is proposed. While the idea to maximise border contrast in segmentation is not novel per se, it is shown here empirically that m...
متن کاملEvolution of colour vision in mammals.
Colour vision allows animals to reliably distinguish differences in the distributions of spectral energies reaching the eye. Although not universal, a capacity for colour vision is sufficiently widespread across the animal kingdom to provide prima facie evidence of its importance as a tool for analysing and interpreting the visual environment. The basic biological mechanisms on which vertebrate...
متن کاملColour Vision: Primary Visual Cortex Shows Its Influence
New results have revealed that neurons in visual area V1 are influenced by chromatic context, in a way consistent with colour constancy. Other studies have mapped the internal cone-input structure of V1 receptive fields. Put together, these findings suggest important dual roles for V1 in colour perception.
متن کاملTowards a cognitive definition of colour vision
In recent years, colour vision abilities have been rather generously awarded to various invertebrates and even bacteria. This uncertainty of when to diagnose colour vision stems in part from confusing what colour vision can do with what it is. What colour vision can do is discriminate wavelength independent of intensity. However, if we take this as a definition of what colour vision is, then we...
